Diverticulosis: Review of Barium Enema Series at Prachuapkhirikhan Hospital
Keywords:
Diverticulosis, barium enemaAbstract
Objective: To determine frequency, anatomic distribution of diverticulosis by barium enema series at Prachuapkhirikhan Hospital and to compare with previous studies.
Material and Methods: All barium enema examinations were retrospectively studied from July 1, 2008 to July 31, 2018. Frequency and anatomic distribution of diverticular disease of the colon were analyzed.
Results: Total of 1,052 barium enema examinations, diverticula were found in 205 patients (19.5%). There were 85 women (41.5%) and 120 men (58.5%). The mean age was 66.6 years (ranged from 33-94 years). The frequency of diverticulosis in younger patients (less than 40 years) and elderly patients (more than 60 years) were about 1.0% and 76.6%, respectively. Predominance of left-sided diverticulosis patients were about 41.0%. The right-sided diverticulosis patients were about 21.0%. Diverticula at both sides were about 38%. Most common location of diverticulosis was sigmoid colon. Diverticulitis patients with myochosis or contrast leakage were complicated diseases which about 10.2%.
Conclusion: The frequency of diverticulosis by barium enema series at Prachuapkhirikhan Hospital was about 19.5%. The significant finding was found in elderly male patient. There was a predominance of left-sided diverticulosis about 41.0%. My community population tended to be left-sided colon which most common occurrence was in the sigmoid colon. In contrast with previous studies in Asia, their common site was right-sided colon.
