Abstract

Posterior capsule opacification is one of the most common complication following cataract surgery which can results in visual disturbance. In order to prevent or reduce the incidence, the study of risk factors for posterior capsule opacification is important.

Objective: This study aimed to find the incidence of posterior capsule opacification following cataract surgery in Damnoen Saduak hospital and to study the associated factors of posterior capsule opacification after the surgery.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in patients who have undergone cataract surgery since 1 October, 2012 to 30 September, 2013. The data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation using chi-square test.

Results: The incidence of posterior capsule opacification following cataract surgery in Damnoen Saduak hospital is 4.98% at the first year, 18% at the third year and 28% after the third year of the surgery (73 of 261 patients). Statistically significant factors associated with posterior capsule opacification were severe visual impairment or blindness VA logMAR > 1.00 (less posterior capsule opacification 13.7% vs 31.4%; p <0.05) ,mature cataract (less posterior capsule opacification 2.7% vs 12.2%; p <0.05) and myopia (more posterior capsule opacification 58.9% vs 43.6%; p <0.05). But the level of myopia were not associated.
Conclusion: The study of risk factors for posterior capsular opacification following cataract surgery in Damnoen Saduak hospital indicated that severe visual impairment or blindness and mature cataract affected less posterior capsule opacification while myopia affected more posterior capsule opacification.
