Abstract

Objective: To examine the relationship of sedentary behavior and aerobic exercise with body mass index (BMI) and obesity among working-age adults at the Lifestyle Medicine Clinic, Health Promotion Center Region 5, Ratchaburi

Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional analytic study was conducted among 171 working-age adults aged 18–59 years. Data were retrieved from electronic medical records and lifestyle assessment forms. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, stepwise multiple regression, and multivariable binary logistic regression. Statistical significance was set at p < .05.

Results: The majority of the participants were female (65.5%) with a mean age of 46.09 ± 10.13 years. The mean BMI was 27.67 ± 6.34 kilograms/metre², and the prevalence of obesity was 61.4%. The mean sedentary time was 4.59 ± 2.23 hours/day, and the mean aerobic exercise duration was 65.79 ± 75.85 minutes/week. Age and aerobic exercise were significantly and negatively correlated with BMI (r = -0.448 and r = -0.252, respectively). Age and aerobic exercise were significant predictors of BMI, jointly explaining 22.8% of the BMI variance (adjusted R2= 0.228). Furthermore, it was found that age and aerobic exercise were significant protective factors against obesity. A 1-year increase in age decreased the odds of obesity by 8.1% (OR = 0.919; 95% CI = 0.882–0.957; p < .001), and a 1-minute/week increase in aerobic exercise decreased the odds of obesity by 1.0% (OR = 0.990; 95% CI = 0.984–0.995; p < .001). Sedentary behavior was not significantly associated with obesity (p = .372).

Conclusion: Aerobic exercise and age act as significant protective factors against obesity, and they significantly predict BMI levels in this population. These empirical findings support the design of tailored lifestyle medicine programs that emphasize increasing aerobic exercise duration for effective weight management among working-age adults.
