Abstract

Objective: To compare the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) between PONV guideline usage and control group and to study the associated factors with PONV in Potharam Hospital.

Methods: This was a quasi - experimental study. The patients were divided into 2 groups, the data of control group were retrospectively collected from the medical records during October 2014 - September 2015 for 1,614 patients and the data of treatment group (PONV guideline usage) were prospectively collected in 1,548 patients, undergoing surgery and anesthesia during October 2015 - September 2016. The incidence of PONV was recorded and compared between two groups. The results were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Chi-square test and multivariable logistic regression

Results: After clinical practice guideline for PONV was used for 1,548 patients. The incidence of PONV was decreased from 6.32 % to 4.52% with statistically significant difference (p value = 0.026). The associated factors were female (adjusted OR 2.28, 95% CI 1.23, 4.23, p = 0.01) and surgery (exploratory laparotomy, cholecystectomy, gynecological surgery) (adjusted OR 2.39, 95% CI 1.19, 4.83, p = 0.014)

Conclusion: Clinical practice guideline for PONV in Potharam Hospital can statistical significantly decrease the incidence of PONV. Female and exploratory laparotomy, cholecystectomy, gynecological surgery increase the incidence.
