Cause of Death in HIV/AIDS Infected Patients in Samutsakhon Hospital

Abstract

Objective: To determine cause of death in HIV infected patients.

Method: This was a retrospective study, collected data of deceased HIV infected patients whom needed admission in Samutsakhon Hospital in 2014.

Results: There were 1,142 patients dead in Samutsakhon Hospital in 2014. 52 of these were HIV infected patients which 65.4% was male, average age was 42.7 years. Most presented with opportunistic infection (80.6%). Mean CD4 level at 1st diagnosis, initiate ARV and last were 109, 101.3 and 109.7 cells/mm3, respectively. 40.4% and 53.3% of the patients received ARV appropriated OI prophylaxis, respectively. Most common cause of death was opportunistic infections (46.2%) following by others infections (26.9%), which TB (21.2%) and PCP (15.4%) were the two leading causes of death from opportunistic infections.

Conclusions: Most common cause of death from this study was opportunistic infections especially TB, which were more common in lower CD4 level. So early diagnosis and treatment will reduce mortality, disability and improve quality of life among HIV infected patients.
