Abstract

Objective: To study and compare factors related to neonatal mortality at Prachuapkhirikan hospital.

Methods : Medical records of the neonatal mortality charts from January 2006 to December 2010 were retrospectively reviewed.

Results : A 5 - year retrospective study of neonatal mortality was conducted at Prachuapkhirikan hospital, from January 2006 to December 2010. There were 41 neonates died. The neonatal mortality rate was 5.3 per 1,000 live-births. For mother, premature rupture of membrane was the most factor relating to neonatal death whereas extremely low birth weight was the most factor in neonate. Respiratory distress syndrome, severe birth asphyxia, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn and clinical sepsis were the most causes of death in neonatal period.

Conclusion : The main factors which related to neonatal mortality were premature rupture of membrane, extremely low birth weight, respiratory distress syndrome, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn and clinical sepsis. Improvement of antenatal care, early detection of high risk pregnancy and availability of newborn resuscitation team would reduce the neonatal mortality.
