Oral Health Status among Thai Male Homeless at the Public Homeless Shelter in Thanyaburi, Pathum Thani

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to describe general and oral health-related characteristics and to explore factors related to having insufficient functional remaining teeth among male homeless at the public homeless shelter in Thanyaburi, Pathum Thani.

Method: This study used data from dental check-up services for male homeless in 2018 which were recorded in dental chart on routine by the Dental Department of Thanyaburi Hospital. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and inferential statistics, i.e., t-test, Wilcoxon rank-sum test, exact probability test, univariable and multivariable logistic regression.

Results: There were 468 male homeless in this study, 71.5% of those were 20-59 years old adult, 92.7% were single, 81.5% were vagrant and 77.1% were disabled that 35% had physical disabilities, 65.4% had mental disabilities and 5.3% had intellectual disabilities. About oral health problems the prevalence of fewer than 20 functional remaining teeth was 52.1%. The mean rates of untreated decayed teeth, missing teeth and filled teeth was 2.7, 12.8 and 0.1 per person respectively. The prevalence of periodontal disease was 97.3%. Insufficient functional remaining teeth was significant statistical association with age more than 60 years and underweight at statistical level 0.05.

Conclusion: The oral health status of male homeless group in this study was much poorer compare to the general population in Thailand. They needed dental treatment and rehabilitation urgently, especially age more than 60 years and underweight group. Solving service – accessibility problems of the homeless group might be given priority in order to help promoting good functional oral health status and quality of life finally.
