Background One-day inguinal hernia surgery reduces the length of hospital stay, surgery waiting time as well as the cost of treatment. Many studies have found that one-day surgery is effective and safe, with few postoperative complications. This study compared the results of one-day and inpatient inguinal hernia surgeries on patients in Mukdahan Hospital.
Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study conducted on 128 patients diagnosed with inguinal hernia in which 64 patients received a one-day surgery while the other 64 patients were given hospitalization. Comparisons of postoperative complications (hematoma, surgical site infection, scrotal swelling, nerve injury, and side effects of anesthesia such as nausea and vomiting and urinary retention), surgery waiting time, length of hospital stay, and patient satisfaction.
Results: The results showed that there was no difference in the occurrence of postoperative complications between one-day and inpatient inguinal hernia surgeries (P-value = 0.31). Patient satisfaction with one-day surgery was significantly greater than inpatient surgery (P-value = 0.01). The patients who received a one-day surgery spent shorter time (P-value = 0.00) in the hospital compared to those who received an inpatient surgery while the surgery waiting time between the two groups did not differ (P-value = 0.66).
Conclusion: One-day inguinal hernia surgery is safe. There is no significant difference in postoperative complications among the two groups of patients. The length of hospital stay can greatly be reduced which is proved to be more satisfying to the patients than inpatient surgery.
