Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes of COVID-19 Patients with Obesity Admitted to Sena hospital

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that spread throughout the world has many levels of clinical features. Obesity is one of the risk factors of severe diseases and complications. This study was conducted to evaluate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of the COVID-19 patients with obesity to bring the information as a guidance for patients care.
Materials and Methods: This was the retrospective descriptive study in patients aged of 15 years old and up, which COVID-19 infection confirmed by RT-PCR (Reverse Transcription and Polymerase Chain Reaction) and obesity (body mass index ≥ 30 Kg/m2) admitted to Sena Hospital from June - August 2021. Demographic data, clinical characteristics, laboratory results, radiologic results, diseases severity, complications and treatment outcomes were collected.
Results: A total of 96 obese patients were included, 33 were male (34.4%). The mean age was 46.6 years. Most common comorbidities include hypertension, diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia. About 95.83% of patients never received any COVID-19 vaccine. Common clinical manifestations were cough, fever and dyspnea. The most common abnormal laboratory results was the increase of C-Reactive Protein. The most common chest x-rays results was ground-glass opacities in both lungs. Most patients (72.91%) had moderate degree of severity illness. The patients’s final treatment outcomes were clinical improvement (88 patients, 91.67%) and died (8 patients, 8.33%). The average length of hospital stay was 12.86 days.
Conclusions: Informations about clinical characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 Patients with obesity admitted to Sena hospital will guide for the prompt treatment and patients care to reduce the complications and mortality associated with COVID-19.
