Surgical treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis. Personal experience over 14 years (1949-1963)

In the years 1949-1963, the author has operated on 278 patients suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis. Thoracoplasty without apicolysis was performed in 85 and with apicolysis in 125; the mortality rate was 2.4 per cent (5 deaths). Plombage with polyethylene sheeting and insertion of Lucite balls (1 inch in diameter) was performed on 38 patients with 8 deaths (21.05%). 30 patients were subjected to pulmonary resections: 1 segmental resection lived, 19 lobectomies resulted in 2 deaths, and 10 pneuonectomies in 2 deaths.
18 diabetic patients were included in this series: 16 thoracoplasties, 1 lobectomy and 1 pneumonectomy. The latter was fatally complicated by pneumonia.
