Abstract

In the years 1958-1967 forty patients suffering from small-bowel tumours were treated in the Department of Surgery, Siriraj Hospital. They were 35 Thai and 5 Chinese. The incidence in the male and the female was equal, and the age preponderance was 41-50 years. Most frequent complaints were abdominal pain and pallor. Radiological diagnosis, although helpful, was not applicable in severe complicated cases.
Anatomical-pathological diagnoses were 36 malignancies and 4 benign tumours; 5 neoplasms were located in the duodenum, 18 in the jejnum and 17 in the ileum. Lymphomata seemed to be more prevalent than carcinomata, in contrast to findings from abroad. 25 per cent of the patients had unremovable tumours and died within 6 months despite deep radiation therapy.
