Cardioversion of chronic atrial fibrillation by asynchronized D.C. shock with the use of propranolol to prevent recurrence

-Abstract
Fifty patients with chronic atrial fibrillation were selected for cardioversion under light anaesthesia. Their ages were 15 to 63 years with an average of 36, and most of them had had atrial fibrillation for more than one year. The shock was discharged from a D.C. defibrilltor without synchronizer. The immediate success was 78 per cent, and there was no serious complication. All of the patients received 5 mg. of propranolol 4 times a day to prevent the recurrence of atrial fibrillation. The long-term result will be reported after follow-up.
