Abstract

Background: The Faculty of Physical Therapy, Mahidol University has changed the curriculum into a module or learning package consisting of four main field studies, including musculoskeletal, neurological, respiratory, and cardiovascular systems, and pediatric physical therapy. Students are required to complete the internship based on each main field.  However, there has yet to be a study on the effectiveness of the new module learning course.

Objective: To study the relationship between the score of physical therapy subjects and clinical practice.

Methods: Student results collected from the academic year 2014-2016 with a sample of 195 students were analyzed.

Results: It was found that students received higher average scores in the internship than in their-house examinations. In terms of correlation, it was found that the physical therapy in musculoskeletal system V subject was statistically and significantly correlated with a score from the clinical practice with low influence (adjusted r2 =0.048), while it found no correlation in other subjects.

Conclusion: One possible explanation is that the content of the physical therapy in musculoskeletal system 5, such as anatomy and biomechanics, allows the student to directly apply to the actual clinical practice, while the contents of the other subjects have a much narrower scope for actual clinical practice.  Hence, no correlation between scores of the other subjects and its correlated clinical practice scores were detected.
