Effects of Academic Service Integration with Teaching and Learning in Teaching and Counseling in Health Subject on Competencies of the Health Teaching of Nursing Students

Abstract

Objectives : To examine the effects of academic service integration with teaching and learning in Teaching and Counseling in Health Subject on competencies of the health teaching of nursing students, Srimahasarakham Nursing College.

Methods : This study was quasi-experimental research study with one group pretest-posttest design. A sample were 136 students from second-year nursing students enrolled in the 2017 academic year at Srimahasarakham Nursing College. This study was conducted between October 2017-March 2018. Research
instruments consisted of 2 parts: 1) experimental instrument; guideline for academic service integration with teaching and learning 2) data collection instruments; questionnaires on personal data, questionnaires on perceived competency of the health teaching. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistic, paired t-test and content analysis.

Results : The nursing students’ competency of the health teaching of nursing students in overall score was at high level. More specific, the highest top three scores for nursing students’ competencies were attitude, educational skill, and knowledge, respectively. After participating in academic service integration with teaching and learning, the nursing students’ competency of the health teaching in overall score was significantly higher than before participating at the level of .05. In addition, the nursing students’ competencies of the health teaching in three domains; knowledge, attitude, and educational skill were significantly higher than before participating at the level of .05.

Conclusion : Academic service integration with teaching and learning could strengthen the competencies of the health teaching of nursing students
