Using topical antibiotic to the decreased incidence of wound infection and value in Trauma Surgery Patients at Pakthongchai Hospital.

Abstract

BACKGROUND :  Infection of wounds from accidents might cause disability, and increase death rate. Prevention and reduction of severity of infection is what doctors and other healthcare staff should be concerned. Using topical antibiotic together with routine wound dressing may to reduce the incidence severity of wound infection.

OBJECTIVE : To study the decreased incidence and value of wound infection after using the topical antibiotic in Trauma Surgery Patients at Pakthongchai Hospital.

METHOD :  This study is  comparative study, comparison of wound infection incidence, length of stay,  and costs of medical care for the traditional wound dressing and the new method (using topical antibiotic together with routine wound dressing). By through a review of inpatient medical records. Randomization of patients 1,411 inpatients trauma surgery in Pakthongchai Hospital, Nakorn Ratchasima, during 2010-2011. The retrospective group has old method  699 cases, and the group has been new method by using topical antibiotics 712 cases ,76 inpatients were identified with infected wounds. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, with the percentage of wound infection.

RESULTS : It is found that the routine wound dressing brought about 5.29% of would infection. The average length of stay was 1.9 per person. The average cost of treatment was 1,967 baht per person. The new method of wound dressing brought about 5.47% of infection. The average length of stay was 2.1 per person. The average cost of treatment was 2,278 baht per person.

CONCLUSION : The new method of wound dressing using the topical antibiotic did not decrease the infection of the wound, the number of days the patients were admitted into hospital, and the cost of treatment.
