Participatory Learning Using Mixed Media for Health Promotion of Adolescent Pregnancies and Unwanted Children at Loengnoktha Crown Prince Hospital Yasothon Province.

Abstract

            Introduction  :  Unwanted pregnancies in adolescents are trending to increase and there is no appropriate care provided. This quasi-experimental research aimed to evaluate the effects of participatory learning using mixed media to promote health behaviors in adolescents with unwanted pregnancies. The health belief model of Becker and social support concept were applied. The group learning program comprised participatory group discussion technique, mixed media, and animation about qualitative antenatal care. Evaluation was conducted by using health promoting behavior of Pender. The sample comprised 19 adolescents with unwanted pregnancies that were purposively selected. Data was gathered using questionnaires that had been validated by five experts and Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient. The data was collected after the ethical approval was received. Statistical analysis employed frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, and paired t-test.

            The results : Showed that 17 of the 19 samples continuously participated throughout the research process. Mean age of the samples was 17 years old. Before the experiment, health promoting behaviors of the samples were in the medium level and after the experiment they were in the good level. The mean scores of health promoting behaviors of the samples significantly increased after the experiment (p<.05).

            In conclusion : The factors of success were participatory learning using mixed media for health promotion and continuous monitoring .This research suggests that the sample size should be increased to be representative of the population of unwanted pregnancies in adolescents for further study.
