Evaluation of Alvarado score for diagnosis Acute Appendicitis

Abstract

Background : Acute appendicitis is common surgical condition. diagnosis was increase complicated either negative appendectomy , ruptured appendicitis or appendicial abscess. Alvarado score was a  tool for diagnosis acute appendicitis .

Objective : For evaluation sensitivity and specificity of Alvarado score for diagnosis acute appendicitis .

Material and Methods : prospective study in 152 thai patients whose age are more than 15 years old and presented with right lower quadrant pain, during July 2007 – March 2009. Data including clinical  symptoms and signs and laboratory were recorded in Alvarado score sheet and computed Alvarado score. Positive result of Alvarado score equal or more than 7 was compared to result of histopathology reported.

Result : From 152 patients, 107 patients was performed appendectomy. 100 patients was diagnosis of inflammed appendix and 7 patients had  normal appendix on histopathology reported. Alvarado score was show sensitivity was 95.00% and specificity was 90.38%

Conclusion : Alvarado score was a useful tool for diagnosis of acute appendicitis because  high sensitivity and specificity .
