Postpartum Depression and Adaptation of First Postpartum Mothers and Second Postpartum Mothers

Objectives: To study the prevalence of postpartum depression and postpartum adaptation among first postpartum mothers and second postpartum mothers.
Methods: The descriptive research was studied in 129 postpartum mothers during 48-72 hours postpartum. The sample consisted of 58 first postpartum mothers and 71 second postpartum mothers at Phang Khon Hospital, Sakon Nakhon Province, and Nonghan Hospital, Udonthani Province, between May-November 2021. The research instruments were the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale and the clinical tool for assessing adaptation to motherhood scale. Both questionnaires were a 4-level scale, which postpartum mothers administrated the questionnaires by themselves. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and chi-squares test.
Results: the prevalence of postpartum depression was 3.4% in first postpartum mothers, and 12.7% in second postpartum mothers, but no statistically significant difference at the 0.05 level was found. As for the level of adaptation to motherhood in the overall, most of the two groups were at a moderate level. As for the adaptation in the perception of motherhood as a crisis, it was found that most of the two groups adapted at a high level. Emotional adaptation to self-improvement, competence and role understanding adaptation, most of the two groups were at a moderately level. The overall and three aspects of the adaptation were not statistically significant difference at the 0.05 level.
Conclusion: The prevalence of postpartum depression among second postpartum mothers was three times greater than the first postpartum mothers. Therefore, psychological caring of second postpartum mothers, should be more attention.
