Factors Associated with Blood Sugar Control Behaviors Among Elderly Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Objective : To study blood sugar control behaviors and the factors associated with these behaviors among elderly patients with type 2 diabetes.
Methods : This research employed an analytical cross-sectional study design. The sample consisted of 159 elderly patients with type 2 diabetes, selected using systematic sampling. Data were collected through a questionnaire developed by the researcher based on a literature review, focusing on factors associated with blood sugar control behaviors in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes. The questionnaire had a reliability coefficient of 0.89. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
Results : The study revealed that the participants’ overall blood sugar control behaviors were at a high level, with a mean score of 3.90 (SD=0.30). Factors significantly associated with blood sugar control behaviors among elderly patients with type 2 diabetes included health perception (β=0.390, P<0.01) and the healthcare system (β=0.306, P<0.01).
Conclusion : Key factors associated with blood sugar control behaviors among elderly patients with type 2 diabetes are health perception and the healthcare system. Nurses and related healthcare personnel should incorporate these factors into the development of programs aimed at enhancing health perception and improving healthcare systems to support effective blood sugar control behaviors in elderly patients.
