Effectiveness of a Rehabilitation Program for Hip Fracture Surgery Patients at Lampang Hospital

Abstract

Objective : To compare the effectiveness of the ReHabHip 2022 program and routine physical therapy.

Methods : A quasi-experimental study was conducted among 58 elderly patients with hip fractures who underwent surgery and received rehabilitation services at Lampang Hospital. The participants were divided into two groups of 29 each: an experimental group receiving the ReHabHip 2022 rehabilitation program and a control group receiving routine physical therapy. Both groups were evaluated by a physical therapist before surgery, after surgery, and one month after discharge.

Results : The experimental group showed statistically significant improvement in clinical outcomes compared with the control group (pain and mobility outcomes: CAS (p < 0.001), BI (p < 0.001), NMS (p < 0.001, r = 0.76), TUG (p = 0.001, r = 0.42), gait speed (p < 0.001, r = 0.55), and knee extensor strength), including a positive trend in fear of falling (Thai FES-17).

Conclusion : The ReHabHip 2022 program was more effective than routine physical therapy in improving rehabilitation outcomes among hip fracture patients in terms of activities of daily living, mobility status, hospital stay length, fear of falling, walking ability, gait speed, and knee extensor muscle strength after hip surgery.
