Factors related to utilization of dental services among the elderly aged 60-74 years in Mueang district, Khon Kaen province.

The advancement of medical technology and success of public health influence an increase the numbers of elderly people. Oral health is considered to be related to physical health and quality of life of the elderly in many aspects. This cross-sectional analytical study aims to study the behaviors and factors related to utilization of dental services among the elderly aged 60-74 years who lived in Mueang district, Khon Kaen province. The total of 480 samples were systematic random sampling. Data were collected by structured questionnaires. Multiple Logistic Regression was used for data analysis, Adjusted Odds Ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval were presented. The significance level was set at 0.05.
The results of this study showed that most of the samples were female (62.9 %). The average age was 67.1 years (sd = 4.7 years). Most samples had married status (66.3 %). The majority of samples received primary education (75.2 %). About 42% of the samples did not have any occupations and 73.5 % had universal coverage health care. The prevalence of utilization of dental services among the elderly aged 60-74 years were 32.08 %. The factors relating to the utilization of dental services included age (ORadj=1.96,95%CI[1.25,3.10]), residence (inside and outside Khonkaen municipal) (ORadj=2.20,95%CI[1.45,3.37]) and dental health education (ORadj=4.12,95%CI[2.70,6.29])
From the result only a few elderly came to receive utilization of dental services, the elderly should be encouraged to regularly receive dental care with dental facility in the convenient place. Dental practitioners should provide knowledge of dental health to the elderly.
