Phototesting in lupus erythematosus:a literature review

Photosensitivity is a criteria to make a diagnosis of Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) according to Systemic lupus international collaborating clinics (SLICC) in 2012 and also an important sign and symptom in various subtype of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE). There has been long observed that lupus erythematosus skin lesions can be experimentally reproduced by UVA and UVB irradiation. Several photo testing and photo-provocation protocols were used as a tool to induce skin lesions and objectively evaluate photosensitivity in SLE and CLE patients. However, most of the lupus patients have normal minimal erythematous dose (MED) to UV irradiation and the reaction to UV light may change during the course of the disease. We reviewed recently photo-testing protocols and these data suggested that photo-provocation is a useful tool to confirmed photosensitivity in SLE and CLE patients.
