Abstract

The standardised Ginkgo biloba extract contains many chemical substances. When it is registered to be used as tinnitus remedy, the quality assurance of the extraction process must be presented. Information includes that the active substances must be 60% by weight and limit of ginkgolic acids that can cause neurotoxic to be less than 5 ppm. These information will then ensure pharmacological activities of treating tinnitus, frequently occurred in old persons. Systematic review shows little benefits of the standardised Ginkgo biloba extract for the treatment of tinnitus when compared to placebo. But It is safe and has no serious adverse effects when compared with other drugs. It is therefore an alternative remedy to treat tinnitus. However, The well-designed randomized control trials with larger subjects should be conducted to evaluate efficacy and safety to confirm that the standardised Ginkgo biloba extract to be effective and safe for tinnitus treatment.
