An Investigation on Rabies Death at Khohong Subdistrict, Hadyai, Songkhla

Abstract

       We reported an investigation on a dead case that was notified by Public Health Office, Songkhla province on February 19, 2018 in order to determine a course of death and to implement a control measure for high risk groups. Contact persons were interviewed. Hair follicles and cerebrospinal fluid of the dead were collected for laboratory diagnosis. Our investigation revealed that the dead case was male who was bitten by stray puppies on the left calf and scratched on the left arm on December 2, 2017. No medication and rabies vaccination were received. Fever and fatigue were then developed. Hydrophobia was reported and painkillers were given on February 5, 2018. Abnormal speech without problems of swallowing was developed. On 8 February 2018, significant abnormal speech, confusion, difficulty on swallowing, chill and dyspnea were shown. He was reported death on February 11, 2018. In addition, using PCR technic, the hair follicles were found positive for rabies. Furthermore, 14 contact persons had been administered with rabies vaccines. Risk communication on rabies within communities was also conducted as a mean of prevention and control.
