Abstract

Persicaria odorata (Lour.) Sojak belonging to Family Polygonaceae is herbaceous plant which are widely distributed in Thailand. Its medicinal uses according to Thai traditional medicine provided various benefits, for example, rash relief, lung disease, and flatulence relief. It has chemical compounds such as decanal, dodecanal, quercetin, scutellarein-7-glucoside and quercitrin. Its bioactivities are anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physico-chemical properties and identify chemical compounds of P. odorata arial parts for setting up its physico-chemical specification. Fifteen samples from natural habitat and herbal drug stores in Thailand were determined by chemical screening tests, Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) identification and physico-chemical properties tests. Furthermore, total phenolics and total flavonoids using UV spectrophotometry were also studied. As a result, P. odorata arial parts possessed chemical compounds groups such as tannins, reducing sugars, amino acids/proteins, flavonoids, and saponins. From TLC result, it showed identification quercitrin, glutamine, alanine, valine, tyrosine, and leucine. The percentage of mean±standard deviation of moisture, water-soluble extractive, 95% ethanol-soluble extractive, total ash, acid-insoluble ash, total phenolics and total flavonoids contents were 7.43±1.63, 15.17±1.46, 14.19±4.12, 12.69±2.81, 0.14±0.05, 4.90±1.95 and 0.30±0.07, respectively. Using the standard criteria as mean±10%, the water-soluble and 95% ethanol-soluble extractives were not less than 14.0% w/w and 13.0% w/w, respectively. The moisture and the total ash contents were not more than 9.0% w/w and 14.0% w/w, respectively. The content of total phenolics was not less than 5.0% w/w. The criteria were not concluded acid-insoluble ash and total flavonoids contents due to their low percentages. This study was useful for the herbal drug quality control and specification in Thai Herbal Pharmacopoeia in the future.
