A Study of Decontamination Efficacy on N95 Respirators for Reuse
Keywords:
Reuse limits, N95 respirators, Decontamination, Filtration efficiencyAbstract
The outbreak of respiratory diseases, including novel influenza viruses as well as emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, combined with PM2.5 air pollution, may lead to shortages of N95 respirators. The aim of this study was to evaluate the decontamination limits of N95 respirators to ensure their safe reuse. Popular N95 respirators with exhalation valves (8210V and DD02V-N95-2K) and without exhalation valves (8110s and 9105) were randomly selected. Four decontamination methods were evaluated, namely UVC irradiation at a wavelength of 254 nm with a light intensity of at least 400 mW/m² for 20 minutes on each side, dry heat by using hot air oven at 75°C for 30 minutes, immersion in hot water at 60±5°C for 30 minutes, and immersion in boiling water at 100°C for 10 minutes. Protective performance was assessed by measuring particle filtration efficiency testing according to 42 CFR 84, requiring a filtration efficiency of at least 95%, and evaluating fit check of mask according to 29 CFR 1910.134, with a maximum allowable leakage rate of 5%. The results showed that UVC irradiation maintained both particle filtration efficiency and fit check performance within standard criteria throughout 20 decontamination cycles. Dry heat treatment maintained acceptable particle filtration
efficiency for 20 cycles; however, fit check performance failed after 13 cycles. Hot water and boiling water immersion reduced particle filtration efficiency and fit check performance below standard limits after only 6 and 4 cycles, respectively. Therefore, UVC irradiation was the most effective decontamination method and did not adversely affect the protective performance of N95 respirators.
