Abstract

Hip fracture from falling in elderly people is a major problem and has difficulty in either operative or conservative treatments. Mortality rate within 1 year is about 20 - 30% and increases if refracture occur. There are very few studies about fall prevention. Thailand is going to be aging society soon, prevention of hip fracture should be considered. We gave knowledge of fall prevention to the hip fracture patients who underwent operation via hospital aging society and home health care unit. This retrospective analytical study divided patients into 2 Groups, group I was patients before preventive hip fracture program (472 patients in 2011 - 2013 fiscal year), whereas group II was patients after preventive hip fracture program (494 patients in 2014 - 2015 fiscal year). We found that incidence of refracture in group I was 2.5% and group II was 0.8%. Analysis by using chi-square test and Fisher’s exact test revealed p =0.035. We conclude that fall preventive program has significant role in prevent refracture in hip fracture patients, and we believe that fall preventive program can expand knowledge
of the prevention to community and reduce incidence of hip fracture in all elderly people.
