A Model of Developing Competency of Registered Nurse on Health Promotion by Network Health for Older People : a Case Study of the Health Region 5

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to 1) study the expected competency of registered nurse working in primary care units on health promotion for older people.2) Create a competency model of registered nurses working in primary care units on health promotion for older people in the health region 5.
Material and methods: This was a research & development study. The researchers used a mixed method, qualitative and quantitative and divided into two phases. 1) Study the expected competency of registered nurse. Composed of 2 steps 1.1 to study expected competency of in older people. Participants used purposive samplings included 30 older people. Data were collected using: semi structured interview guide and focus group and data were analyzed using content analysis and to study expected competency of 10 stakeholders (purchaser, provider, consumer and regulator) in the health region 5. Data were collected using: semi structured interview guide and focus group and data were analyzed using content analysis. 1.2 To study expected competency of registered nurses working in primary care units on health promotion for older people. Participants included 280 registered nurses. Data were collected using: a questionnaire and were analyzed using mean and standard deviation analysis. 2) Create a competency model of registered nurse by checking its appropriateness through focus group discussion among 5 experts. To evaluate the feasibility of the drafted model by the participants of 30 nursing directors.

Results: 1) The expected competency on health promotion for older people as perceived by stakeholders revealed that 1.1) the expected competency on health promotion for older people based on Ottawa charter was at a moderate level ( gif.latex?\fn_jvn&space;\small&space;\bar{x} = 3.10). 1.2) The expected competency on health promotion for older people based on Thai Nursing Council’s concept was at a moderate level (gif.latex?\fn_jvn&space;\small&space;\bar{x} = 2.87). 2) The experts concurring in their opinions on the appropriateness of the model found that the expected competency on health promotion for older people consisted of 3 components: 1. the first component, objective and goal for creative competency development model; 2. the second component, main parts of competency development model included; 2.1 setting nurse competency according to area needs; 2.2.
assessing needs about expect competency on health promotion for older people; 2.3. plan, procedure about competency development model; 2.4 implement competency development model into practice, monitoring and evaluation 3. the third component, conditions for the achievements.
Suggestion: Chief Human Resource Office should schematically and continuously support for registered nurses competency developmental model.
