Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS)-Guided Prostate Biopsy for Diagnosis of Prostate Cancer in Nakhonpathom Hospital

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the results of TRUS-guided prostate biopsy in Nakhonpathom hospital

Material and Methods: Retrospective study was performed in 99 men who underwent 113 TRUSguided prostate biopsy due to elevated serum PSA or abnormal digital examination of prostate gland from July 2008 through January 2012. Cancer detection rate, the association between cancer detection rate and the age of patients, the association between cancer detection rate and serum PSA and the complications were evaluated.

Results: Prostate cancer was found in 29 men, of which 27 men had been diagnosed with the initial biopsy and the other 2 men with repeated biopsy. Cancer detection rate were 27.27% and 14.29% for the initial and repeated biopsy respectively. Prostate cancer was found most between the ages of 71 and 80 years. There was the association between cancer detection rate and the age of patients, and between cancer detection rate and serum PSA. Cancer detection rate were 6.78%, 26.92%, 28.57% and 100% for serum PSA level of 4.01-10.00, 10.01-20.00, 20.01-50.00 and more than 50.00 ng/ml respectively (p < 0.000001). Three major complications were found in this study included 2 cases of febrile bacteremia and 1 case of prolonged gross hematuria which needed to be hospitalized for 5 days.

Conclusion: TRUS-guided prostate biopsy is effective and safe procedure to diagnose prostate cancer. And the results from this study were comparable with previous studies.
