Abstract

A retrospective study was done in all anesthetic patients in Fiatchaburi Hospital from January to December, 2007 in order to collect the incidence and the associated factors involved in perioperative death. There were 58 (5.7 : 1,000) perioperative death out of a total of 10,198 anesthetic services performed. The death involved all emergency procedures. ASA class IV-V accounted for 91.4% (n = 53) of the death. Bleeding (43.1%) and neuropathology (31%) were the commonest underlying causes of death. Effective communication between the anesthetic and surgical teams for adequate preoperative care, improvement in blood bank and hospital facilities will reduce the rate of perioperative death.
