Effects of Handwashing Motivation on Handwashing Behavior of Personnel at Nakhonpathom Hospital

Abstract

The objective of this study was to examine the effects of Handwashing Motivation on Handwashing behavior of Personnel at Nakhonpathom Hospital from 1st  December 2007 to 31st  March 2008. The study instrument were brochures regarding knowledge of handwashing information, equipment and amenities to facilitate handwashing practices, warning signs and observation record. Data were collected by Infectious Control Ward Nurses before and after being motivated campaign. The data was analyzed by using frequency and percentage.

The observation of the hand washing practices included professional nurses more than doctors and harpers, conducted during morning more than afternoon and evening, washed their hands before commencing medical procedure more than after completing medical procedures. The procedures were including ; puncture, injection, suction, dressing and infectious patient-care. The above mentioned medical personnel washed and cleaned their hands with water and disinfectant solution rather than rubbing their hands with alcohol hand rubs. After handwashing campaign was launched, handwashing practice rate increased from 46.2% to 67% and their handwashing behaviors were proper and appropriate.

The study showed that handwashing motivation campaign supported the personal’s handwashing behavior to be more proper and appropriate. Therefore, it is suggesting that an innovative campaign should be supported. To increase the awareness of medical personnel to see the importance of handwashing and to improve their hand washing behavior, regular information and knowledge plus the appropriate equipments and amenities should be provided.
