Abstract

Related factors for the blood coagulation among patients who taking Warfarin in the Warfarin clinic, U-Thong hospital, Suphan Buri.

Background

Warfarin is an anticoagulant which is found to be effective for preventing thrombosis and embolism. Despite its effectiveness, warfarin treatment is limited as there are many contraindicators. Warfarinís activity has to be monitored by blood testing for the international normalized ratio (INR)

The objective of this study was to investigate the factors affected to the blood coagulation in the patients taking warfarin. This was an observation research conducted at U-thong hospital. Data collection was done by using questionnaire included baseline characteristics such as age, gender, co-morbidity diseases, BMI, duration of taking medicine, side effects and INR. A total of 66 patients were included in the study. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistic.

This study showed that half of these samples were elderly female. The diseases that indicated warfarin treatment were atrial fibrillation (AF) and valve replacement (AVR & MVR). Their BMI were mostly in normal range (45.4%) but 28.8% of these were obesity. Duration of taking wafarin in average was 14.15 months. The result also found that 18.2% of the sample had common side effect which was hemorrhage, otherwise 54.4% of the patients had decrease in blood coagulation level. There is no significant relation between age, BMI and the blood coagulation.

Moreover, the physicians should investigate about eating habit and medication compliance for finding related factors for the blood coagulation among patients who taking Warfarin in the Warfarin clinic, U-Thong hospital, Suphan Buri.
