Oral Decoration and Complications: A Study in Juvenile Vocational Training Centers, Nakhon Pathom

Objective: This study aimed to describe the situation regarding oral decoration and complication among male youths in Juvenile Vocational Training Centre for Boys in a district of Nakhon Pathom.
Methods: This study use data from dental check-up service for youths in Juvenile Vocational Training Centre for Boys in 2014 which were obtained from history taking, oral examination, and record in dental chart on routine by corresponding public hospital. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to summarize frequencies and proportions of various clinical characteristics.
Results: There are 3 types of oral decoration including tooth surface modification or drilling (34.3%), tongue piercing (14.4%), and lip or intraoral tattoo (1.5%). Complications varied by type of oral decoration; e.g., hypersensitive tooth in case of tooth drilling; bleeding, pus exudates, and numbness in case of tongue piercing. The main reason for accepting oral decoration is friend influence and most of the cases were done by friends.
Conclusions: Three types of oral decoration found in male youths in Juvenile Vocational Training Centre for Boys include tooth surface modification or drilling, tongue piercing, and lip or intraoral tattoo. These were done using unsterile materials and postoperative complications were found corresponding to each type of intervention. Long-term oral healthcare was needed to prevent and monitoring adverse consequents.
