Incidence of Fracture from Falling and the Osteoporotic Therapeutic agent used in over 50 years old Woman in Banpong Hospital from 2003 to 2007

Abstract

A retrospective descriptive study was conducted in Banpong hospital by reviewed the data from OPD and IPD records, to assess the incidence of fracture from falling and the osteoporotic therapeutic agent used in woman are over 50 years old. From Jan. 2003 to Dec. 2007, the numbers of these patients were 81, 79, 107, 99 and 110, respectively. The wrist and forearm was the most common fracture site (37.4%). The rate of repeated fracture in same patient was 14.1%. The patients had received osteoporotic therapeutic agent in only 56.1%. Calcium supplementation was used in 56.1%. Calcium plus vitamin D supplementation was used in 16.1%. The antiresorptive agents such as bisphosphonate, calcitonin and estrogen hormone were used 1.47%. In the past 5 year, tendency of patients with osteoporotic fractures had increased every year, but most of over 50 years old woman were under treated for osteoporosis. The patients who got experienced fracture from osteoporosis would have more risk of fracture in the future. Therefore, early prevention and screening in high risk patients were essential to prevent the fragility fracture.
