Abstract

Objective: To study the prevalence and factors associated with the occurrence of denture stomatitis in removable denture wearers in Cha-am Hospital.

Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. Data collection was done during May 2019 to July 2019 from 140 denture wearers who attended Cha-am Hospital by questionnaires that included of gender , age, dental visit , accumulation of denture plaque , frequency of denture cleaning , nighttime wearing of removable dentures , age of removable dentures , diabetes mellitus , smoking tobacco and the types of removable denture , and oral examination. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics:frequency , percentage , mean, standard deviationand inferential statistics: chi – square test and binary logistic regression.

Results: There were statistically significant associations between denture stomatitis , accumulation of denture, plaque nighttime wearing of removable denture and age of removable dentures. Denture wearers with denture plaque had 3.87 times higher risk of denture stomatitis when compared with denture wearers without denture plaque. Denture  wearers with nighttime wearing had 8.08 times higher risk of denture stomatitis when compared with denture wearers without nighttime wearing. The other factors (gender, age, dental visits, frequency of denture cleaning , diabetes mellitus , smoking tobacco and the types of removable denture) were not associated with denture stomatitis.

Conclusion: Accumulation of denture plaque, nighttime wearing of removable  dentures and age of removable denture were associated with denture stomatitis. Therefore , denture wearers should be educated with cleaning denture to reduce denture plaque every day ,  do not wearing removable denture overnight and recommend to do a new denture when the  dentures are over 5 years.
