Abstract

Ingrowing nail is a common problem presenting to the surgeons. The treatment are various either conservative or surgical methods, but partial nail plate avulsion only results in associated high recurrence rate. Therefore, the surgical procedure may be integratedly combined with segmental nail matrixectomy to provide best chance for eradication. Surgical techniques including curettage, electrocautery, chemical abrasion and carbon dioxide laser ablation of the nail matrix are also options. The segmental nail matrixectomy is found to have positive outcomes i.e. decreased recurrence rate, complications, pain level, duration of inflammation and wound healing. This study reported a case of 35 year old male patient with inflammation and infection of the medial and lateral nail fold of right great toe. He had previous history of ingrown nail at the right great toe and undergoing  partial nail plate avulsion in the past 7 months.  This time, the diagnosis was recurrent ingrown toenail at right great toe and surgical approach was partial nail avulsion with electrocautery matrixectomy and suture nail folds. One year after operation, there were no recurrence and complications.
