The Study of Psychology Well-Being of Elderly in Municipalities Nonthaburi Province Thailand

Abstract

             Objective: This study aimed to investigate the level of psychological well-being of the elderly in the municipalities of Nonthaburi Province and to compare between the psychological well-being and selection factors.

               Method: This descriptive study was conducted on the sample of 405 older persons selected by multi-stage sampling. The psychological well-being of the elderly questionnaire developed by the researchers using concept of Ryff and Keyes was used as an instrument in this study. The content validity was checked by 7 experts and the items with index of Item-Objective Congruence greater than .50 were used to collect the data. The reliability by the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was .91. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, and independent samples t-test.

                 Result: The study found that the overall mean score of psychological well-being was at a good level (gif.latex?\dpi{200}&space;x\bar{} =4.18 SD =0.70). The Item "positive relationships between elderly and friends" and Item "autonomy of elderly" were at very good level ( gif.latex?\dpi{200}&space;x\bar{}=4.41 SD =0.63 and gif.latex?\dpi{200}&space;x\bar{} = 4.24 SD =0.67 respectively). There was a significance level at a .05 statistical between psychological well-being and selection factors as follow: 1) sufficient of income 2) being a member of the elderly club.

                 Conclusion: The overall mean score of psychological well-being was at a good level. Sufficient income and participating in the elderly club's activities are more likely to improve the psychological well-being of the elderly. Therefore, the elderly should be encouraged to join the club activities including to creative activity to promote income for elderly as appropriate.
