Incidence and Risk Factor of Neonatal Hypoglycemia in High Risk Infant, Nakhonpathom Hospital

Hypoglycemia is a common metabolic disorder in newborns, particularly high risk infants. Blood sugar screening and prompt treatment are therefore, important.
Objective: The purpose was to determine the incidence and associated risk factors of neonatal hypoglycemia in high risk infants.
Methods: In this retrospective descriptive study, data were collected from the medical records of newborns at high risk of hypoglycemia or signs of hypoglycemia, Nakhonpathom Hospital. Data were collected between October 1, 2020 and September 30, 2021.
Results: The incidence of neonatal hypoglycemia was 9.0 % in live births and 28.3 % in high risk infants. The most common risk factors of hypoglycemia were premature birth and diabetic mothers. The risk factors associated with hypoglycemia were preterm birth (p < .001), low birth weight, and diabetic mother (p < .001).
Conclusion: Screening for hypoglycemia in the high risk infants remains necessary to reduce the Incidence and impacts either short term life threatening or long term effect on the quality of life of the babies.
