Objective: This was to determine the prevalence and associated factors with anemia among young adolescent pregnancies at King Narai Hospital.
Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2021. A total of 270 medical records from pregnant women aged below 17 years who were delivered at King Narai Hospital were collected and randomized according to anemia group (study group) and non-anemia group. Statistical analysis was performed by SPSS version 22. Univariable and multivariable analysis was used with p value < .05 and was considered statistically significant.
Results: The prevalence of anemia in young adolescent pregnant women was 19.3%. The anemia group had higher rates of no antenatal care, sexually transmitted diseases, preterm labor, preterm birth, fetal distress, low birth weight, birth asphyxia, APGAR score at 1 minute less 7, and respiratory distress syndrome compared with the non-anemia group. Multivariable analysis showed that no antenatal care and sexually transmitted infections were associated with anemia in pregnancy (OR = 5.08, 95% CI = [1.22, 21.17] and OR =2.86, 95% CI = [1.18, 6.93], respectively)
Conclusion: Young adolescent pregnancy who sexually transmitted infections and no antenatal care were significantly increased risk of adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcomes, especially in the anemia group.
