The Effect of Program Enhancing Self-Efficacy in Self-Care on Preventive Allergy Behavior among Patients with Allergic Rhinitis

Abstract

This quasi-experimental research with two groups pretest-posttest design was to study the self-efficacy promotion program for self-care on preventive allergy behavior of patients with allergic rhinitis. The sample group was 60 patients with allergic rhinitis from Phatthalung Hospital. Data was collected from November to December 2023. The research instrument consisted of a program enhancing self-efficacy in self-care using 4 strategies for developing self-efficacy: 1) promoting physical and emotional states, 2) observing models, 3) receiving advice, and 4) Experience from taking action developed according to Bandura's concept of promoting self-efficacy. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire on personal information and a questionnaire on behavior to prevent allergic symptoms of patients with allergic rhinitis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The mean differences were tested with t-test statistics.

The results found that the experimental group had mean score of self-prevention significantly different at p <0.05 comparing before and after receiving the program. The mean score of preventive allergy behavior of the experimental group after receiving a enhancing self-efficacy in self-care of patients with allergic rhinitis was significantly higher than the control group at p < 0.05. Therefore, should continue to use the program enhancing self-efficacy as a guideline for promoting self-care in patients with allergic rhinitis.
