Development of Clinical Nursing Practice Guidelines to Prevent Endophthalmitis in Cataract Patients Undergoing Intraocular Lens Implantation
Abstract
This research and development study aimed to develop nursing practice guidelines for patients undergoing intraocular lens implantation for cataract surgery to prevent endophthalmitis. The purposive sample consisted of 20 ophthalmic operating room nurses and 291 cataract patients who underwent intraocular lens implantation. Data were collected between January and April 2025. Instruments included a nursing guideline adherence evaluation form and a patient record form for monitoring cases of endophthalmitis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and chi-square test.
The results revealed that the nursing practice guideline was rated as highly appropriate ( =3.835, S.D.=0.66 When classified by nursing role, the circulating nurse role was highly rated appropriate ( =3.76, S.D.=0.38). The Regarding feasibility, 97.5% of nurses agreed that the guideline was highly feasible. Among the 20 nurses at Sunpasitthiprasong Hospital, most were able to adhere to the guidelines effectively. Of the 291 patients, 286 (96.6%) received care in accordance with the guideline, and 10 patients (3.4%) did not. Overall, 286 patients (98.3%) did not develop postoperative infection. The rate of endophthalmitis was 0%. The guideline can be applied for implementation to peri operating nursing care in another cases ophthalmic surgery.
