Prevalence and Associated Factors of Fall Risk among Community-dwelling Older Adults

This descriptive correlational cross-sectional study aimed to explore the prevalence of fall risk and its associated factors among community-dwelling older adults in Mueang District, Phayao Province. A multistage sampling method was utilized to select a sample of 150 older adults aged 60 years and above during December 2023 to January 2024. The instruments for data collection included a personal information questionnaire, the SARC-F questionnaire for sarcopenia risk assessment, the FRAIL scale for frailty screening, the Thai Falls Risk Assessment Test (Thai FRAT), and a family functioning assessment questionnaire. The reliability of the SARC-F, FRAIL scale, and Thai FRAT was evaluated using the test-retest method, yielding Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICCs) of 0.91, 0.86, and 0.99, respectively. The family functioning questionnaire demonstrated internal consistency with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.88. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression at a statistical significance level of p<.05.
The results demonstrated that the prevalence of fall risk among community-dwelling older adults was 57.33%. Factors significantly associated with an increased fall risk included being female (ORadj = 3.15, 95% CI = 1.37–7.27, p<0.01), having an education level higher than primary school (ORadj = 9.24, 95% CI = 1.64–52.13, p<0.05), and being at risk for sarcopenia (ORadj = 2.68, 95% CI = 1.20–6.01, p<0.05). Consequently, healthcare professionals should incorporate these factors including gender, educational attainment, and sarcopenia risk into targeted screening protocols and proactive care management frameworks to prevent falls among community-dwelling older adults.
