Abstract

This developmental research aimed to develop and evaluate the appropriateness of an innovation for preventing chronic hand contractures in persons with disabilities. The study was conducted from June to December 2025 in five phases: 1) problem survey, 2) innovation design, 3) prototype evaluation, 4) innovation improvement, and 5) appropriateness assessment. The sample consisted of 10 staff members from the Ubon Hug Paeng Home for Persons with Disabilities and Development, Ubon Ratchathani Province, selected through purposive sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The research instruments consisted of a questionnaire assessing the feasibility and appropriateness of the innovation, which was validated for content validity by experts, yielding an Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) index ≥ 0.67, and the reliability showed a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.85. Descriptive statistical data analysis included frequency, mean, percentage, and standard deviation, and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test statistic. The statistical significance level was set at 0.05.

The findings revealed that the prototype herbal hand grip innovation for managing chronic hand contractures resulted in high satisfaction levels among the sample group across all aspects, except for durability, which was rated at a moderate level. After the innovation improvement, four aspects achieved the highest satisfaction levels: ease of learning to use, safety, problem-solving aligned with needs, and practical usability. Durability remained at a moderate level. When compared to the             pre-improvement prototype, the sample group showed statistically significant increases in satisfaction across five aspects: ease of learning to use (p=0.021), problem-solving aligned with needs (p=0.020), practical usability (p=0.010), reduction of caregiver burden (p=0.034), and overall satisfaction (p=0.008). In conclusion, the herbal hand grip innovation effectively addresses chronic hand contractures in persons with disabilities while reducing hand and nail hygiene maintenance burden.
