The Assessments of Eye Disease Treatment with Rattan Thorn at Jainad Narendra Hospital, Chai Nat Province

Abstract

The Thai Traditional Medical Council has announced that eye disease treatment with rattan thorn to be the procedure to treat symptoms or eye disorders is the Thai folk medicine in the method of Thai traditional medicine. This research was a quasi-experimental study with a one-group pretest–posttest design. The aims of this research were to compare the results of before and after vision disorder treatment effects of cataract indication with rattan thorn based on visual acuity assessment, and to investigate patient satisfaction. The qualified Thai traditional medical practitioner who had been transferred knowledge from Mr. Cha-em Khumphet treated patients for three consecutive days. The assessments of visual acuity before and after treatments were recorded. The results from the 40 ophthalmic patients at the Thai Traditional Medicine Clinic, Jainad Narendra Hospital showed that the patients who joined this treatment were 26 females (65%). Patients have eye diseases from the highest pinguecular descending to pterygium, cataract, and glaucoma. Treatment results, as measured by visual impairment of the Logarithm of the Minimum Angle of Resolution in the pre-treatment and post-treatment showed improvement in visual acuity among the majority of patients. However, the sample group had the highest level of satisfaction after receiving treatment for all issues. This study's research results can be utilized as academic data to confirm the results of ophthalmic treatment with rattan thorn, to be accepted by patients and multidisciplinary, as well as to develop a multidisciplinary. This research suggests that further research should be multidisciplinary, such as an ophthalmologist in diagnosis and eye examination for the patient, in order to increase the data reliability.
