The effectiveness of acupuncture together with conservative treatment in osteoarthritis knee at Sirindhorn Hospital Khonkaen.

Abstract

Background : Osteoarthritis of the knee is a common problem in general practice. The disease is gradual and continuous destruction of articular cartilage that cause of pain, stiffness, and limited activity daily living current treatment. Al though the World Health Organization recognizes the effectiveness of acupuncture in osteoarthritis, but few studies were found in Thailand

Objective : Orthopedic and Medical Rehabilitation department Sirindhorn Hospital Khonkaen. access the effectiveness of acupuncture together with conservative treatment in osteoarthritis of the knee compared with conservative treatment group only.

Methods : Randomized controlled trail the inclusion criteria is patients who diagnose osteoarthritis of the knee by American college of Rheumatology criteria. In Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation  Department Sirindhorn Hospital Khonkaen used to modify total WOMAC Scale, statistical analysis use the Paired-T-Test and Mann Whitney U test.

Results : There was no difference in basic data (age, sex, BMI) result of study compare between before and after. It was found to improve in both groups, but if compared between the two groups we found the group receiving conservative treatment coupled with acupuncture better reduces pain, than the conservative treatment group only with statistical significance (P<0.05), and no complication such as bleeding or infection were found. It can be concluded that acupuncture in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee is effective, especially together with conservative treatment.
