Investigation Report of Hand Foot and Mouth Disease in a Nursery and Elementary School Gerng Sub-District, Muang District, Mahasarakham Province

Abstract

Introduction : On 23rd May 2017, a hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) case visited Mahasarakam Hospital. This case was sent from a nursery in Gerng Sub-District. Surveillance and Rapid Response Team (SRRT) of Gerng Sub-District and Mahasarakham Hospital had investigated during 23 May - 11 June 2017

Objective : This confirm diagnosis and outbreak, virology, source of infection and action for control HFMD.

Methods : Descriptive study was done including situation review for HFMD in Thailand and Mahasarakham Province. In order to identify more HFMD cases in the nursery, a case getting painful sores in the mouth and a rash with blisters on the hands, feet and buttocks during 15th May - 11th June 2017 were applied as case definition. Throat swab specimens from 7 cases were collected for virological confirmed by RT-PCR. Environment survey in nursery care, elementary school and patient’s house had been done.

Results : In 2017, incidences of HFMD in Thailand, Mahasarakham province, Muang District are increasing to be 41.62, 41.83, 33.82 case per 100,000 person, respectively. This study found 7 confirmed cases and 18 probable cases.Attack rate of HFMD in the nursery and elementary school are 15.1% and 10% respectively. The first case was found on 17th of May 2017 and the last case was found on 1st of June 2017. Two cases had been confirmed for confirm EV 71 subgroub B5. Risk of outbreak is activity in class room.

Conclusions : This study confirmed outbreak of EV 71 HFMD. No new case had been identified after closing and cleaning the nursery and elementary school. However, there are new cases from the other school detected in community.
