Pre-Operative Preparation Nursing Model in Geriatric Anesthesia of Anesthetist Nurses
Abstract
Objective : To develop the model of pre-operative preparation nursing model in geriatric anesthesia and evaluate its effects.
Methods : The study was a research and development design. The study was conducted among 20 anesthetist nurses, 85 geriatric patients undergoing surgery with general anesthesia and endotracheal intubation. The research instruments were used as follows; preoperative preparation guidelines for geriatric anesthesia, preoperative visit plan, anesthetic method plan, feedback reports, anesthetic risk reports and nursing reports. These instruments were validated by three experts. This study was conducted between January and December 2014 and comprised of 5 phases: 1) plan of development, 2) development of pre-operative preparation model, 3) applying model on geriatrics, 4) observation, and 5) feedback of studying. The data were analyzed by content analysis.
Results : The preparation prior to geriatric anesthesia model developing were include 1) prepare practitioners 2) to expand anesthesia services with one stop service at outpatient surgery, 3) prepare elderly patient, 4) providing patients and family information, 5) prepare nurse anesthetists with the knowledge and skill, 6) sharing information in nurse anesthetists team, 7) postoperative follow-up visit after surgery, 8) review of incidence and complications of anesthesia and develop nursing care. The effects of using a preparation prior to geriatric anesthesia model developing were decreased the incidences of serious complications after receiving anesthesia, enhance the skills of practitioners to geriatrics anesthesia. Moreover, practitioners and geriatric patients were satisfaction.
Conclusion : The preoperative preparation for geriatric patients was effective to improve knowledge and skills for anesthetist nurses, clinical outcome, and also capable to be a reference for further developing
