The Effect of Empowerment Nursing Practice Guideline on Preventing Endotracheal Tube Displacement of Newborn Infant in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit ,Mahasarakham Hospital

Abstract

                   The research is a Quasi-experimental research which aims to study the effect of applying empowerment nursing practice guideline to prevent endotracheal tube displacement in newborn infant of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Mahasarakham hospital. A purposive sampling was used in this study. The sample group was studied during July and October 2014 and consisted of 11 registered nurses, who work in NICU of Mahasarakham hospital, and 30 newborns those are on endotracheal tube with mechanical ventilator.                                                         

                  The researcher considered 3 factors of sampling neonatal; those are gender, gestational age, weight of sick newborn to get the findings. All gathered data was analyzed by Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test.  The findings showed that the result of pre-and post-applying empowerment to nursing practice guideline are similar in all aspects, which are age, weight, gestational age and number of date on endotracheal tube. However, most of newborns in those sample groups are aged 1 day and average age is 2.73 day, average gestational age is 34.93 weeks and average infant weight is 2,344.67 grams. On the other hand, the result also identified that the officer in a post-applied empowerment group extremely has the satisfaction of nursing practice guideline for preventing endotracheal tube displacement of newborn infant.

                  In conclusion, according to empowerment concept of Konger and Kanungo (1988), empowerment nursing practice guideline for preventing endotracheal tube displacement of newborn infant makes staffs realize the problems and find the solution. Moreover, they learn to guideline how to achieve the target, which is consistent with the research of Fieldman, Garfield and other researchers.
