The Effects of a Preparation Program Combined with Social Support for Colonoscopy on Anxiety, Bowel Cleanliness Quality, and Satisfaction Among Patients at Risk for Colorectal Cancer

Objectives : 1) To evaluate the effectiveness of a preparatory program combined with social support in reducing anxiety, enhancing bowel cleanliness quality, and increasing satisfaction among patients at risk for colorectal cancer undergoing colonoscopy. 2) To compare anxiety levels, bowel preparation practices, bowel cleanliness quality, and satisfaction scores between the experimental and control groups.
Methods : This quasi-experimental study employed a two-group pre-posttest design. The sample consisted of patients at risk for colorectal cancer who had abnormal fecal immunochemical test (FIT) results from a screening program and were scheduled for their first colonoscopy at Mahasarakham Hospital. Using G*Power, the sample size was calculated at 33 participants per group. Participants were randomly assigned to either the control group, which received standard nursing care, or the experimental group, which received the preparatory program combined with social support. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, and paired sample t-tests.
Results : After receiving the program, the experimental group showed a significant reduction in anxiety compared to both their pre-intervention levels (t=10, p-value<0.001) and the control group (t=-4.35, p-value<0.001). Bowel cleanliness in the experimental group was rated adequate in 90.91% and inadequate in 9.09%. In the control group, 72.72% achieved adequate cleanliness, 24.24% were rated as inadequate, and 12.12% as poor preparation. The experimental group also reported significantly higher satisfaction scores than the control group (t=5.29, p-value<0.001).
Conclusion : The preparatory program combined with social support effectively reduced anxiety, improved bowel preparation practices, increased bowel cleanliness and enhanced satisfaction with the service among patients at risk for colorectal cancer.
