กลุ่มอาการหายใจลำบากเฉียบพลัน (Acute respiratory distress syndrome : ARDS) เป็นภาวะรุนแรงที่คุกคามต่อชีวิต โดยมีลักษณะสำคัญ คือ การเกิดภาวะหายใจล้มเหลวเฉียบพลันและรุนแรง
มีสาเหตุจากปอดอักเสบ ติดเชื้อในกระแสเลือด การสำลัก และการบาดเจ็บรุนแรง ดังนั้น การประเมินและการพยาบาลผู้ป่วยที่มีภาวะดังกล่าวมีความสำคัญต่อการวางแผนการดูแลรักษาอย่างถูกต้องและทันท่วงที การประเมินทางการพยาบาลโดยการซักประวัติอย่างละเอียด ติดตามสัญญาณชีพอย่างต่อเนื่อง การประเมินสภาพปอดและการใช้เครื่องวัดออกซิเจนปลายนิ้ว การตรวจวิเคราะห์ก๊าซในเลือดแดง และกำหนดแนวทางการรักษา
การดูแลผู้ป่วย ARDS ต้องมีการทำงานร่วมกันของสหสาขาวิชาชีพ โดยมีบทบาทของพยาบาลเป็นองค์ประกอบสำคัญ เป้าหมายหลักของการดูแล คือ (1) การเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพการให้ออกซิเจนและการระบายอากาศ และ (2) การลดความเสี่ยงต่อภาวะแทรกซ้อน ดังนั้น การพยาบาล ประกอบด้วย การให้ออกซิเจนเสริม การดูแลผู้ป่วยที่ได้รับการใช้เครื่องช่วยหายใจ การบริหารจัดการการให้สารน้ำอย่างระมัดระวัง การจัดท่านอนคว่ำ และการส่งเสริมการเคลื่อนไหวหรือการฟื้นฟูสมรรถภาพอย่างเหมาะสม นอกจากนี้ พยาบาลควรร่วมมือกับทีมสุขภาพในการประเมินข้อบ่งชี้ของการใช้ยาที่เหมาะสม เฝ้าระวังภาวะแทรกซ้อนจากการรักษา รวมถึงการให้ความรู้แก่ผู้ป่วยและครอบครัวอย่างต่อเนื่องเกี่ยวกับโรค แนวทางการรักษา และการป้องกันภาวะแทรกซ้อน ถือเป็นองค์ประกอบสำคัญที่ส่งผลต่อคุณภาพการดูแลโดยรวม
